Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor Information

Introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor

What is Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor?

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser for use with assessments (quizzes, tests, and exams) in HuskyCT (Blackboard). It prevents the user from printing, copying, going to another URL (unless specifically permitted), or accessing other applications during an exam. If an exam in HuskyCT requires LockDown Browser, the user will not be able to take the exam with a standard web browser.

Most exams that use Respondus LockDown Browser also use Respondus Monitor, which is a recorded proctoring feature. Respondus Monitor promotes exam integrity by using a webcam and screen-recording technology to record the user and what they are doing during the exam.

How does Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor work?

Using Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor

Read the Student Technology Guide: Respondus LockDown Browser and complete the following steps:

  1. Download and install LockDown Browser.
  2. Ensure Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor is working correctly:
    1. Check that your equipment is compatible with the LockDown Browser minimum requirements and Respondus Monitor minimum requirements.
      • Tablets are not supported devices. Respondus lists Chromebooks as compatible, but Chromebooks are not recommended nor supported by UConn ITS.
      • You must have a working webcam (includes microphone).
      • Use a fast and reliable internet connection — hardwire directly to your modem, if possible. Review Tips for Best LockDown Browser Experience for more information.
    2. Test your equipment by practicing the start-up sequence.
    3. Check that your Duo authentication method is compatible with LockDown Browser — MacOS users should be aware of issues using TouchID. (Taking your exam will require validating a new login to HuskyCT from the LockDown Browser.)
  3. Navigate to the exam in HuskyCT as usual, and take the exam using Respondus Lockdown Browser.

    Tips for Success

    • Stay tuned to communications from your professor regarding your exams, and review the rules related to your exams in the syllabus. Clarify any questions you have as early as possible.
    • If available, complete the practice exam in your course to experience using Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor before a graded exam.
    • Allot sufficient time to complete your exam, including start-up time.
      • The exam begins with a start-up sequence before the exam is launched. It’s not unusual for start-up time to take 5–15 minutes.
      • Exams may be timed. Before starting the exam, know how much time is available.
      • The start-up sequence does not count toward your time; the exam timer won’t start until the exam is launched.
    • If the computer or networking environment is different than what was used previously with the Webcam Check and System & Network Check in LockDown Browser, run the checks again prior to starting the exam.
    • You are to work independently while taking exams. Collaboration with others, the use of peer-to-peer chat, or referencing external exam question compilation websites is academic misconduct.
      • Ensure you are in a quiet location where you will not be interrupted.
      • Turn off all other devices (e.g. tablets, phones, second computers) and place them outside of your reach.
      • Clear your desk of all external materials not permitted—books, papers, other devices.
      • Remember, LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications.
    • To produce a good webcam video, do the following:
      • Take the exam in a well-lit room and avoid backlighting, such as sitting with your back to a window.
      • Ensure your computer is on a firm surface (a desk or table). Do not have the computer on your lap, a bed or other surface where the device (or you) is likely to move.
      • Show your photo identification to the webcam for at least 5 seconds to the webcam.
      • Make sure the camera can see your face clearly. Avoid wearing baseball caps or hats with brims.
      • If using a built-in webcam, avoid tilting the screen after the webcam setup is complete.
    • Remain at your computer for the duration of the exam. Remember that you will be unable to exit the exam until all questions are completed and submitted.
